M: I am so excited you're going to school today.
W: Me too! [Hugs M on the leg]
M: What are you most looking forward to?
W [rolling his eyes]: Mom. Stop.
M: Stop what?
W: Stop doing that.
M: Stop doing what?
W: Talking. This makes me . . . I can't think of the word. Irritated. It makes me irritated.
M: Talking about school makes you irritated?
W: No. YOU talking about school makes me irritated.
[And M, open-mouthed, follows W out the door to school]
